MULTISPECTRAL AND CLOUD MICROPHYSICAL MODEL (CMM) CLOUD TOP ANALYSIS

From an open collaboration with the Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences Department, University of Wisconsin – Madison, Wisconsin, USA (WISCDYMM), a series of multispectral cloud top satellite-based analysis methods have been developed with the main goal of extracting cloud-top hydrometeor microphysical properties.

The use of the multispectral analysis approach has allowed extracting a lot of information about the cloud top structure, and in particular about the presence and characterization of cloud top plume. MODIS multispectral data has been used to this purpose: the most effective way to analyze cloud top has been found to be the use of both Level 1 and Level 2 data, making direct use of all 36 multispectral bands and some Level 2 products like Cloud Top Pressure (CTP).

Da una collaborazione con il Dipartimento delle Scienze dell’Atmosfera e dell’Oceano, Università del Wisconsin – Madison, Wisconsin, USA (WISCDYMM), sono stati sviluppati una serie di metodi di analisi multispettrale per l’estrazione e l’analisi delle proprietà microfisiche delle nubi.

L’utilizzo combinato di prodotti MODIS di Livello 1 (36 bande spettrali) e di Livello 2 (Cloud top Pressure) ha permesso di estrarre informazioni sulla struttura delle nuvole.
